Staying Ready: Water Safety and Community Preparedness

As environmental concerns surrounding Iowa’s water systems make headlines, the NAACP Des Moines Branch is urging thoughtful preparedness—not panic.

Recent reports of nitrate pollution raise questions about the long-term safety of our metro water supply. While no emergency has been declared, we know from experience that communities like ours must often look out for ourselves before systems do.

We are recommending that households consider purchasing 1 to 2 cases of bottled water per person, if financially able. Each case is approximately 3 gallons, and this guidance aligns with CDC emergency recommendations, which advise storing at least ½ gallon of drinking water per person per day.

This is not about fear. It’s about being ready. History has shown that Black communities are disproportionately impacted when environmental systems fail. A little preparation today can go a long way in protecting your family tomorrow.

We also ask that you consider the needs of elders, those with disabilities, and others in our neighborhoods who may not be able to act on this guidance themselves. If you’re able, offer help, share resources, and check in.

If this water situation resolves without disruption, nothing is lost; your water will still be used. But if delays or shortages occur, you’ll be glad you took action early.
